De Hallen is a lot of different things to a lot of different people but fundamentally it’s a weekend under a roof.
Hotel bars haven’t been on the radar for Team Kompas, but that’s changed. It’s had to with so many unmissable venues arriving lately. Maybe the problem was that we associated them with stuffy piano lounges and a library-esque atmosphere. But that perception is all on us and we’re willing to accept our mistakes and move forward. We’re pretty good like that, especially when there might be a good gin and tonic involved. So we finally went to Volkshotel.
Situated in de Pijp on the corner of Albert Cuypstraat and the cafe-laden Eerste van der Helststraat, Flamingo sits opposite de Groene Vlinder (another favourite spot of ours). Like its neighbour, Flamingo’s relaxed atmosphere radiates into the street and the outdoor picnic-style benches beg for long summertime visits to soak up the sun.
Amsterdam is a city which recently got the knack of creating interesting brunch spots. So it’s harder than ever for intrepid newcomers to create a clearing in the fast-growing forest of coffee and cocktails. However, CT Coffee & Coconuts on de Pijp’s Ceintuurbaan has hacked its way in, and looks to have built itself a permanent settlement.
